Common FAQs

Q:
Why is my disposal being recalled?
A:
A metal component inside our 1 horsepower and certain 3/4 horsepower garbage disposal units may not meet our quality and durability standards and can break and come out of the disposal during use, posing an impact hazard to consumers. Therefore, in an abundance of caution, we are voluntarily recalling the potentially affected models in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Q:
How did you discover this issue?
A:
We take any issue involving the quality or safety of our products very seriously. We identified this issue through our ongoing program of monitoring quality feedback from our customers.
Q:
Have there been any reports of injury?
A:
We have not identified any reports of injuries related to this issue at this time.
Q:
What units are affected by the voluntary recall?
A:
All 1 horsepower and certain 3/4 horsepower garbage disposals manufactured from November 1, 2015 through January 31, 2017 are affected by the voluntary recall. The models in question were manufactured and sold under the Waste King, Moen, Franke, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Kitcheneater, Gemline, Luxart Finale, Barracuda and Stream 33 brand names.
Q:
When were these units sold and are they still on the market?
A:
The units were sold between approximately December 2015 and March 2017. We have made every effort to quickly remove the affected units from the market, by, among other things, asking retailers to immediately hold, stop selling and return their inventory. They are being replaced with units that meet our quality and durability standards.
Q:
Have you fixed the problem and how do I know that there won't be an issue with the new unit?
A:
As of February 1, 2017, as part of our ongoing commitment to improving the durability and quality of our products, we changed the component in the potentially affected models to a proven solution with a history of performance on other models that meets our quality and durability standards.
Q:
How can I determine if my disposal has been recalled?
A:
You can determine if your disposal unit is affected by the recall by checking the serial number, which in most cases is located on a plate on the bottom of your unit and follows "S/N". A few models have the serial number on the side of the unit. An example of a serial number is 1D6-36052.

We also have pictures to help you locate the serial number on our website at http://www.disposalsupport.com.
Q:
What do I need to do to switch out my affected disposal for a new one?
A:
We apologize for this inconvenience and are working as fast as possible to replace the affected units with minimal disruption to our customers.

We will provide information for you to contact one of our local service agents to arrange a time for them to come out and remove your existing disposal and install a new one that meets our quality and durability standards. They will take the old disposal and send it back to us.
Q:
How much will this cost?
A:
Nothing. We are replacing the affected disposal units at no cost to you.
Q:
I put this garbage disposal in. Can you just send me a new one and I'll install it myself?
A:
If you prefer, we will send you a new garbage disposal to install yourself and ask that you return the old one. Please unplug and cut the power cord on the old disposal, put the unit in the same box, place the prepaid label that we email you on the outside of the box, and drop it off at the nearest FedEx location.
Q:
How soon can I expect to get my unit replaced?
A:
In most circumstances we would expect you to receive your replacement unit within approximately 5 - 7 business days; however, the timing can be impacted by our available inventory levels of your particular unit. The timing to get your unit replaced will be dependent upon finding a mutually convenient date and time for the installation to be performed by the service provider. It is our goal to replace your unit quickly with as little disruption as possible.
Q:
Is it safe to use my disposal until it's replaced with a new one?
A:
We have not identified any reports of injuries related to this issue at this time. However, in an abundance of caution, you should stop using your disposal until it can be replaced.
Q:
My disposal isn't part of this voluntary recall, but I don't feel safe using it and would like to have it replaced. Is that possible?
A:
The voluntary recall involves only our 1 horsepower and certain 3/4 horsepower disposals manufactured from November 1, 2015 through January 31, 2017. Based on our investigation and review of this matter, other disposal models (i.e., 1/2 or 1/3 horsepower models) are not affected by the recall issue.
Q:
My disposal is working fine. Do I have to have it replaced?
A:
Yes. If you have one of the identified models manufactured between November 1, 2015 and January 31, 2017, then your unit is affected by the voluntary recall and needs to be replaced.
Q:
Can I return the affected disposal to the store I purchased it from for a full refund?
A:
No. We will provide information for you to contact one of our local service agents to arrange a time for them to come out and remove your existing disposal unit and install a new one that meets our quality and durability standards. They will take the old disposal and send it back to us.
Q:
How long do I have to participate in this voluntary recall?
A:
We will provide information for you to contact one of our local service agents to arrange a time for them to come out and remove your existing. We urge you to do this as soon as possible so that you can begin using a disposal unit again. They will take the existing disposal away and return it to us at no cost to you.
Q:
Will you replace my disposal with the same model?
A:
We will make every effort to replace your unit with the same model. If that particular model is no longer available, we will replace that unit with a like model that has similar horsepower and other features.
Q:
Will the new unit still be warrantied?
A:
Absolutely. Your new disposal will have the same new unit warranties in place.
Q:
What happens if my service agent doesn't show up?
A:
